Kathy Clare - Ceramicist
Studio 10

Irish born, Kathy Clare, moved to London in the 90’s where she enjoyed a career within finance, finally settling as an artist in the Cotswolds. In 2016 Kathy got an opportunity to study Fine Art achieving a BA (2018), followed by an MA (2020) at Cheltenham University.

Surrounded by beautiful Cotswold cottages, floral gardens and ever-changing sessional views, these dreamlike surroundings inspired her study for her master's. ‘Poetics of Space’ by French philosopher Gaston Bachelard further inspired her, showing the importance of home and the spaces within them; the corners we occupy, cocooned by familiar furniture and objects which make the space our own. The flicker of light from a candle or open fire that shines from within, projecting out into the darkness, giving a feeling of warmth and homeliness to those that pass. Home is so important to us, whether that's our childhood house or where we are now. A realisation that led the way for Kathy to become a maker and designer of ornamental lighting.

'My style is unique; I have developed my own skills by experimenting with materials and process. My hand casting timings are key to achieving translucency in the porcelain walls of my lamps, which are then hand painted in delicate floral patterns using ceramic paints and lustres.’
