Raphael Barratt - Fine Artist, painter
Studio 8

Raphael Barratt is a painter and drawer. Born in Kent in 1994 she moved to London to study painting at Camberwell College of Art and later Drawing at The Royal Drawing School.

Influenced by a fascination with ancient landscapes as places of psychological narrative, Raphael explores ways to use landscape to set both the mood and aesthetic structure of her work. Inspired by Indian miniatures and the sculptural stillness of the early Renaissance techniques such as those of Piero Della Francesca’s monumental frescos, Raphael’s work does not define topographical truth, but rather alludes to the specific atmosphere of moments in a place or landscape, both in the present, and in memory.

By collapsing space, Raphael places her protagonists in direct dialogue with the landscape – both figure and land in a dreamlike suspense.

Raphael works on wooden panel and paper prepared for oil, working in thin layers of oil paint to enable a luminosity and fresco like texture, balanced with areas of deep dark colour.
