After 18 years living in London, Carmel King moved to Nailsworth in December 2019. She is a freelance photographer and has spent the last decade documenting craftspeople and manufacturing across the British Isles. Inspired by her own family’s three-generation textile firm she is passionate about capturing traditional crafts and celebrating the best of British making and industry.
Carmel has documented various boroughs of London, collaborating with London Metropolitan University to create visual audits of industry. These records highlight the pace at which businesses are moving out of the city but also the breadth of manufacturing firms that are still operating in London.
Her book Made in London featuring fifty workshops and factories, is to be published by Merrell in September 2022.
Some of the images in this exhibition were taken for the book. Carmel plans to carry on her Makers & Manufacturers series and is keen to document studios, workshops and factories in the Five Valleys and beyond.
Alongside working with artists and makers, Carmel’s clients include interior design studios, design agencies, charities, independent brands and national newspapers and magazines.
Carmel is exhibiting at Three Storeys, where she is also a studio resident, and her exhibition forms part of the Select Arts trail.
