'Garden Journaling'; a 2 day workshop with Emma Leyfield

‘Garden Journaling’, a 2 day workshop with Emma Leyfield

Day 1: Saturday 2nd April, 10am-4pm
Day 2: Sunday 3rd April, 10.30am-3.30pm
’The Setting’ gallery, Three Storeys, Old Bristol Rd, Nailsworth, GL6 0JE

Cost: £120

Before the age of photography, planning and keeping track of a garden required an illustrated journal to study the progress of heirloom varieties, pest control and crop rotation. These marvellous books are no longer strictly needed, but have the potential to be a beautiful form of art.

In this two-day class you will have the chance to experiment and create your own garden journal, by merging scrapbooking, sketch-booking and mindful-journaling with botanical illustration and the ins and outs of your garden - whether that's your allotment, balcony, or back garden plot. We will cover a wide range of skills including book-binding, creative journaling, visual elements that don't involve drawing as well as observational drawing and painting botanicals. A beginner will have the chance to test materials and learn watercolours under guidance, while advanced students will have the opportunity to branch into their own creative practice, inspired by the course content.

Day 1: Coptic Book-binding, an introduction to painting botanicals in watercolour.

Day 2: Illustrating garden wildlife, painting and designing seed packets, larger garden paintings.

All materials will be provided, as well as some garden specimens, however, please bring a selection of things from your garden that inspire you. Such as, cuttings, herbs, pressed flowers, seeds, seed packets and young plants.

This class will take place in within the gallery on the ground floor. Lunch is not included but The Plot Café on site serves a variety of light lunches and cakes. On Sunday, as the café is closed, tea, coffee, and biscuits will be provided for the class.

Nailsworth is an artistic, market town nestled in a wooded valley to the east of Stroud. It is renowned for its selection of award-winning eateries and has a range of independent shops for you to explore in your lunch break.
