‘A Slight Chance of Rain’
New Scottish and Gloucestershire Landscapes by Kerry Phippen
The Setting gallery, Three Storeys, Old Bristol Rd, Nailsworth, GL6 0JE
Tuesday to Friday 9am -5pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am - 4pm.
Kerry Phippen, originally from Perthshire, has lived and worked in Gloucestershire since 1999.
Kerry’s fascination with the North continues to pull her over the border for inspiration and continued exploration every year. This exhibition presents a new body of paintings which explore remoteness, shelter, and awe in the face of stunning locations. Many of these works have been inspired by a trip to the Shetland Islands in 2022, and Kerry will be taking up an offer of artist-in-residence in Shetland during 2023.
Kerry works predominantly from her sketchbooks and walking on location in these remote spots. She has made many return trips to the Cairngorms and the Isle of Skye which she first experienced as a very young child – these dramatic landscapes continue to inspire drawings and paintings, based on observational sketching and memory. Back in the Stroud home studio, her sketches and supporting photographs are then explored and made into larger drawings or paintings.
Also included in this new collection, are locally inspired oils, watercolours and pastels made of Stroud’s rolling landscapes, the National trust Commons and Slad Valley.
Kerry has exhibited in the RWA Annual Exhibition, The RA Summer Exhibition, the Jerwood Drawing Prize, and is a regular participant in Stroud’s Open Studio trails.
