Vanessa’s workshops are designed to stimulate and promote a feel good factor for all students. All abilities and ages are welcome. This is a fun and enlightening workshop in a spacious, relaxed and supportive atmosphere.

Vanessa uses simple exercises and different techniques students learn to ‘let go’ with new confidence and skill, to find and work with their ‘inner smile’. Vanessa teaches students to select and deselect, to establish favourite methods of drawing, mark making and painting. Individual style is encouraged and banishing self judgement is Vanessa’s main concern. She aims to help you free up your ‘creative and daring spirit’, to expand your practice and bring even more joy and excitement to your work.

‘I will be teaching you how to navigate through picture planes; how to move competently from near to far on a 2D image.  Various methods I teach will help you deepen this understanding and build a foundation to play with. We will think about how to use shapes, negative and positive, with equal importance. Strong risk taking and varied mark making will help you go outside your comfort zone. White gouache can be an interesting safety net and help encourage push and pull, from which visual tension can emerge. We will also see how digital mark making on our phones can help us learn to be confident whilst taking seemingly wild risks too.’

Vanessa will create a lively still life display to work from. She is well versed in many mediums and can help if there is specific guidance you are looking for. If you would like to work on your own project, Vanessa can help you navigate a photograph, teaching you how to see depth of field so you can recreate feeling and atmosphere effectively from an image.

10% of all profits from the workshop will be donated to Stroud Women’s Refuge. The Inspired cookery book, is also on sale in the café in support of this cause.
