Gemma Pitman

GEMMA PITMAN

Gemma is a Cotswold based artist with a lifelong passion for both inland and coastal countryside. She relocated from Cornwall to Gloucestershire in 2010 and her inspiration is firmly rooted in nature. She paints with inks, metallic mediums and acrylics creating art with a contemporary interpretation on places that people find connection with.

Within her coastal series, there is a ‘map’ to be found in each piece. She enjoys incorporating rivers, roads, lochs and coastline into her work, marrying the location with an animal that is linked to that area. She paints these ‘map lines’ with metallic medium. Depending on where you stand and the light of day, these lines will either be subtle or illuminated.

From her base in Gloucestershire she designs and hand crafts a small number of ceramic pieces, drawing on inspiration from the natural world for decorative themes and colour palettes.  She uses Staffordshire stoneware clay and a careful choice of slips and blended glazes to create depth, tactility and surface interest.

Sophie will be hosting a Porcelain Wall Art workshop on Tuesday 12th September; more details to be found here.
