Sue combines her background in theatre design with illustration using a visual language incorporating layers of papers, fabrics, stitch, and print. With a fascination in the passing down of objects and skills through the generations, she is interested in finding ways of documenting collections of personal artefacts which hold meaning and memories for families, capturing shadows, traces, fragments, and layers of time. Inspiration comes from old photographs, letters, post cards, household textiles, clothing, tools, and a variety of other domestic items that reveal the hand of the original owner through wear and tear, darning and mending.
Her work incorporates stitched lines to create drawings which capture stories and memories documenting these in a unique collaboration between disciplines involving a personal perspective.
Memory Threads forms part of her final major project for an MA in Illustration and Sue has enjoyed undertaking research in the form of textile conversations with local creatives who have a connection to thread, stitch and cloth echoing traces of Stroud’s cloth industry. A response to shared objects and the memories they hold aims to capture stories which resonate the past and connect to the present preserving moments for future generations. As the viewer is invited to move through the space the audience become an important part of the narrative adding another layer to her work.
