Tuesday - Friday 9am - 4pm, Saturday 10am - 4pm, Sunday 10am - 3pm. The Setting, Three Storeys, Old Bristol Rd, Nailsworth, GL6 0JE
‘Rooted’ will be the first solo exhibition of printmaker and pattern designer Susie Hetherington, to be held in ‘The Setting’ gallery here at Three Storeys, between 16th-28th May.
Susie holds a number of creative roles. With almost 20 years experience as a graphic designer, she works still with long term clients such as local natural soap company ‘Soap Folk’, and is the creative lead here at Three Storeys. With good design and ideas at the heart of what she does, Susie is still engaged with her background of branding, packaging and illustrative design. However, in the last decade, a love of interiors, pattern and printmaking has brought Susie to the work she creates independently today. Drawing on a love of nature and observations of the intricate details of plants, trees and flowers, Susie sketches designs that she then carves to lino. Handprinted prints and textiles have become the outlet for these passions, and pattern is at the forefront of everything she creates. From original prints Susie sells a wide range of digitally reproduced soft furnishing fabrics by the metre, but is also actively retaining the hands-on side to her process; ink and block printed imperfections are all part of the story.
The ‘Rooted’ exhibition will be a room full of patterns, fabrics and wallpaper, all inspired by the natural world around us here in Gloucestershire; Susie lives above Nailsworth on the edge of the commons, and doesn’t have to travel far for daily inspiration. Her work and her life is very much rooted to this place. Framed prints from large lino blocks will be on display and for sale, printed on a wonderful old Wharfedale press with Martin Clark of Tilley Printing, Ledbury. Other works will include pieces inspired by local history and architecture, and sketchbooks will be on display to demonstrate Susie’s process towards her intricate patterns.
Susie will be running a drop in demonstration on Saturday 20th May and Saturday 27th May, where visitors may get a chance to ink up a lino block especially inspired by Nailsworth. Drop in to see her from 10am.
